How to Choose a Coach

Finding a qualified coach is easy. We've set up our Directory so that you can search by keyword based on any of the text fields below (e.g. name, city, organization, coaching credential, coaching specialty). Look for our certified coaches  - every one has completed at least 140 hours of coach training and many have achieved International Coach Federation (ICF) Master Coach status.

Finding a coach is a highly subjective process so we offer some guidelines to help you choose your ideal coach as an informed consumer.

1. Clarify what you want - before you go to the database to search for a coach, envision your ideal coach. Discover what outcomes you'd like, the coach's areas of expertise, level of experience, coaching style and fee you'd like to pay. Questions to ask yourself:

  • What areas do I want to address with a coach?
  • What changes do I want to make?
  • What coaching style would work best for me?
  • What other criteria are important to me in selecting a coach?

2. Search the database - using key words that capture what you want, search for your ideal coach.

3. Choose coaches to interview – choose several coaches who are most likely to help you get the outcomes you want.

4. Possible questions to ask prospective coaches:

  • What kinds of clients do you most enjoy working with?
  • What background or areas of expertise do you bring to coaching?
  • Tell me about your preferred coaching style. I especially want help with (organizational change, leadership, life balance, vision, relationships, time management). How would you help me with that?
  • Do you offer a complimentary coaching session so we can determine if our relationship is a good fit?
  • Are you certified by an accredited coaching school or do you have International Coaching Federation credentials?
  • Do you have references I can call?
  • How long have you been coaching?
  • Use your intuition to ask your own questions!

5. Choose your Coach –After comparing coaching styles, choose the coach you are most excited about working with!
